Since then, large studies have documented the relative safety of a trial of labor after a previous cesarean. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology now recognizes VBAC as a reasonable alternative for appropriately selected candidates.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ea02e7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7ea02e7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32e8e7a e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"32e8e7a\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5acac6b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5acac6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Am I a Good VBAC Candidate?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5482d66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5482d66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Candidates for VBAC should have had only one previous cesarean delivery with a low transverse (horizontal) uterine incision. An exception exists for patients with two prior cesareans and one previous successful vaginal delivery. Patients who had a cesarean for a non-recurring reason \u2014 such as fetal distress or breech presentation \u2014 are generally better candidates than those whose cesarean was due to dystocia (failed labor due to baby size or pelvis size). Early in pregnancy your doctor can assess your pelvis; later in pregnancy, fetal weight estimates may also affect recommendations.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Note: <\/strong>The scar on your abdomen does not necessarily match the scar on your uterus. If you do not know the type of uterine incision from your previous cesarean, your doctor may need to review a copy of your previous operative report.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Patients who should NOT attempt VBAC generally include those with:<\/p><ul><li>Two previous cesareans and no prior successful vaginal deliveries.<\/li><li>A vertical (classical) uterine incision \u2014 associated with high risk of uterine rupture.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0478fea e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0478fea\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67d3f5f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"67d3f5f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6564bbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6564bbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Risks and Benefits of VBAC<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b7452bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b7452bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>VBACs should only be attempted in a hospital setting where emergency delivery can be performed. There is a 0.5\u20131% risk of uterine rupture with VBAC, which carries an increased risk of excessive blood loss, hysterectomy, fetal injury, and death.<\/p><p>Benefits of a successful VBAC include:<\/p><ul><li>Shorter hospital stay<\/li><li>Quicker recovery<\/li><li>Lower risk of excessive blood loss and infection<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>It is also important to note that the more cesareans a patient has, the greater the risk in future pregnancies for placenta previa or placenta accreta \u2014 conditions in which the placenta implants improperly and can be associated with heavy bleeding, transfusion, and possibly hysterectomy.<\/p><p>Patients who attempt VBAC but ultimately require an emergency cesarean face slightly greater risks than those who opt for a planned repeat cesarean in a controlled setting.
