Am I at Risk for Postpartum Depression?

Many women experience postpartum blues — a mild disturbance beginning 3–4 days after delivery and lasting several days, with symptoms including mood swings, crying spells, and difficulty concentrating. Postpartum depression is more serious. Symptoms include loss of interest or pleasure in life, loss of appetite, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness, making it extremely difficult to function or care for yourself or the baby. Those at higher risk include women with a history of depression, severe PMS, or stressful life events during or shortly after pregnancy. If you are experiencing these symptoms, please let your doctor know right away.
